The canvas is a place of creativity and struggle—literally and figuratively. It’s the surface for oil painting.

It’s the floor of a boxing or wrestling ring.

It’s the lore: the background setting and scope of narratives, whether fictional or historical.

And “to canvass” means testing of support, as in politics, but also in our own community—or even within the constituent parts of ourself.

Long, the traditional material for sailcloth, canvas has been replaced by newer materials: nylon, Dacron, Kevlar, taffeta laminates and carbon composites. Yet, it remains the go-to cloth for protecting a boat’s parts—and passengers— from the elements: wheel and winch covers and biminis, dodgers and to protect wheels and winches.
